Building new skills!
It will be interesting to see how things evolve to ensure new skills are retained
It has been intensely interesting to see how teachers have adapted so rapidly and adeptly to teaching remotely – and their students too. There will be many lessons learned from this shift, a few that I have noticed is that teaching online is different. For one thing, it is harder to change things on the fly, so preparation and having resources to hand are more important. Some teachers have told me that this has helped them to brush up their teaching practice, questioning why they have been doing certain things and introducing better practice.
This is true also for meetings run online. They need better preparation and some school leaders see that they are running better meetings as a result – habitual patterns are being broken by necessity.
When things get back to normal (whatever that means) it will be interesting to see if remote teaching and remote meetings continue in some form. Multi-campus schools are an obvious possibility, eliminating some of the movements to-and-fro. Another possibility is including part-time staff fully in faculty or curriculum meetings. Another would be to have more inter-school meetings for sharing and reciprocal learning.
I suspect that as things continue to evolve many more possibilities will emerge that will lead to a blended approach (which may still be heavily face-to-face when back to normal) but the skills to vary the mix and increase the online component would not be lost.
Another capability is being built that will, ultimately, enhance student outcomes.
It will be interesting to see what happens!
