Rethinking education!
It IS all about relationships, after all
More and more we are hearing that the current pandemic and lockdown is an opportunity to rethink how education occurs. I agree.
Education is a service sector, meaning that most value is produced in the relationships within or between human beings. The nature and structure of relationships can change relatively quickly, in the grand scheme of things.
Contrast this to the shift in moving from petrol- or diesel-fuelled vehicles to electric-powered vehicles. This entails continuing research to solve the problem of shifting to this new power source for commercial vehicles, new factories need to be built, existing factories need to be retooled or shutdown, supply chains need to be set up to procure electric power sources, new mines need to be developed and existing ones extended to source higher quantities of raw materials such as lithium and so on. This is a much more difficult process that will likely stretch over several decades before we can say we have changed this aspect of our transport systems.
What stands in the way is clearly defining the nature of new relationships and then planning out the pathways through which these new relationships come into being.
Although changing how value is created in services is quicker than in other sectors, for an individual obliged to change deep-seated behaviours – and often heal internal dysfunctions - it can seem daunting, if not impossible.
Creating a clear picture of what this future looks like is an important first step and then breaking into manageable stages the road from here to there.
All the elements are now available and there seems to be a greater willingness now to rethink how things are being done.
This is reason for optimism.
